
TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR
Full-Time Hiring rate $17.64/hr

The Town of Newport seeks to hire an individual who will perform responsible operational, labortory and maintenance functions in a water or wastewater treatment plant.
Essential Duties and Tasks
Makes regular tours of plant and checks bar screens, engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, clarifiers, chlorinators, and other equipment for proper functioning.
Records data from various meters, gauges and dials; logs daily, weekly, and monthly activities.
Monitors laboratory results to determine process adjustments including chemical feed changes, wasting sludge, backwashing filters, detention time, etc.; adjusts water plant to reflect changing creek conditions, especially regarding turbidity.
Monitors SCADA and other technology. Starts and stops water plant.
Performs standard laboratory chemical and biological tests.
Performs general preventive and scheduled maintenance; makes routine inspections and makes minor mechanical repairs or adjustments; assists on major maintenance and repairs.
Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.
Performs routine building and grounds maintenance including cleaning and painting.
Collects water and wastewater samples from various sources and stages in the treatment processes.
Analyzes plant performance and makes chemical feed and other adjustments consistent with supervisory guidelines; back washes filters.
Prepares a variety of logs, records, and readings.
Participates in needed in maintenance and repair of other utility system equipment and infrastructure.

Backs up other staff as needed. Performs related duties as required.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in chemistry or biology and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a water or wastewater treatment plant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Administering the Class
Employees should not complete the probationary period until they receive either a Grade C Well or Grade 2 Wastewater Operator Certificate.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Ability to obtain North Carolina Well Water Operator's Grade C Certificate or Grade I Wastewater Operator Certificate within 12 months of hire date.
